What is Psycho-Social Empowerment?

What is Psycho-Social Empowerment?

Psycho-social empowerment is a process that aims to increase individuals' and communities' control over their own circumstances and to help them achieve their goals. It encompasses focusing on strengths, participation in community activities, and both psychological and social support mechanisms.

Core Definition: Empowerment is not about telling people how to solve their problems — it is about providing an environment and support where they can discover their own solutions.

Individual Dimension

Developing self-awareness, confidence, and coping skills

Social Dimension

Community participation, networking, and building collective support

Protective Dimension

Post-trauma recovery and safeguarding mental health

Core Elements of Empowerment

The empowerment process is built on three axes: recognising strengths, joining a social support network, and meaningful expression. Art stands at the centre of this process, because when words fall short, drawing, music, or movement allow a person to externalise what is within.

Strength does not come from others; it is the discovery of a capacity rising from within.
